Palmetto was a booming town during the early 19th century. The Manatee River played a large part in the town’s development. It was the main transportation route for pioneers. Mail and supplies were transported by boat, and citrus was shipped by boat.
The town’s first jail was located near the dock. In 1889, the town was incorporated. By 1889, the city had a mayor, city council, fire department, and a library. There was an Olympic theater and a POST OFFICE, not to mention the CARNEGIE LIBRARY.
The first telegraph message sent across the Gulf of Mexico in 1871 was the precursor to modern day electronic communication. Palmetto’s earliest landmarks include the Five Oaks Inn, the Palmetto First Baptist Church, and the PALMETTO STATE BANK.
A number of other landmarks and historical sites have been erected in the town. Some of the notable buildings are the CARNEGIE LIBRARY, the OLYMPIA THEATER, and the PALMETTO FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH.
Holy Cross Manor II
A little more than a year ago, my family and I relocated to the Palmetto, Florida area. We were lucky enough to find a great place to live. With a nice location, low rent and the ability to buy groceries on site, we are thrilled to be a part of the community. This community has all the perks of a big city while keeping a small town feel. The residents are friendly, and the town is a fun and safe place to live. The best part is that we are still close to everything that Palmetto has to offer. Some of our favorite pastimes include watching our favorite a cappella groups, a visit to the local park or the plethora of nearby dining options. Luckily, we are not far from the Tampa airport, so we can get there in no time at all. And with all the activities at our disposal, we don’t even have to leave the state to enjoy some of the more fun and exciting events of the season! Next Page!
