Ca’ d’Zan house

John and Mable Ringling’s Ca’ d’Zan is a magnificent mansion that is now a part of the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida. The mansion is known for its elegant decor and festive holiday decorations. It is also one of America’s most visited architectural treasures.

When the Ringlings were first building their house in Sarasota, they admired the architectural style of Venice. They began working on Ca’ d’Zan in 1924. Their goal was to create a home that would be a showplace for entertaining.

Ca’ d’Zan is an example of the Venetian Gothic architectural style. It is constructed of brick and terra cotta “T” blocks. The interior of the home features elaborate designs, ornate furnishings, and an Aeolian organ.

When the Ringlings first built the house, the furnishings were the best money could buy. Many of the rooms are still open to the public today. There are colorful stained glass windows and gorgeous wood paneling throughout.

Medieval, Renaissance, Greek, Roman and Cypriot antiquities

The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art is located in Sarasota, Florida, five miles northwest of downtown. This museum features thousands of works of art, including medieval, Renaissance, Greek, Roman, Cypriot, and American antiquities. Its collections include pottery, sculpture, and paintings by Rubens, Velazquez, and Hals.

John Ringling was a collector of fine art and a founder of the Ringling Bros. Circus. He traveled to Europe frequently, where he purchased a variety of ancient and Renaissance works of art. These included ceramics, terracotta, and glass from the Early Bronze Age to modern times. His collection also included works by Florida artists, including paintings by Benjamin Wilson and Frederic Church.

John Ringling had a passion for art and history. In 1928, he purchased an ancient art collection from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A few years later, he added Cypriot, Greek, and Etruscan works of art to his collection.

John Ringling’s courtyard contains a 20th century bronze cast of Michelangelo’s David. Currently, Ringling’s collection has over 3,070 works. Other important pieces include Cypriot art and terracotta sculpture. A great place to also visit is Robinson Preserve.
