BRADENTON — Hundreds of residents from Manatee and other counties filled the seats at the county commission’s land use meeting Thursday to oppose forward movement on a proposed housing development next to two successful racing facilities owned by YouTube star Cleetus McFarland. They want to keep the Freedom Factory and Bradenton Motorsports Park alive. Read on for some ideas.

Located in Manatee County

BRADENTON — Hundreds of residents from across Florida and even Arizona packed the benches at Manatee County Commission’s land use meeting Thursday to oppose forward movement on a housing development next to Bradenton Motorsports Park and The Freedom Factory race tracks. They urged commissioners to deny a developer’s request for a comprehensive plan amendment that would allow 4,500 homes on land zoned agricultural. The owner of the race track and drag strip, Garrett Mitchelle — better known to his millions of YouTube viewers as Cleetus McFarland — has launched a campaign to prevent the change.

Mitchelle says he fears the new houses will spell the end of his business, citing examples of racetracks closing nationwide after residents complained about loud noises. He also pointed out that zoning laws prevent liquor stores from opening near churches and gentlemen’s club’s nearby schools. Residents who live in the area also complain about the odors and air pollution generated by the racing.

It offers a quarter-mile drag strip

The Bradenton Motorsports Park is an old-school race track where you can watch cars screech down a quarter-mile strip and eat some tasty food. It also has a lot of parking for spectators. The facility offers a wide variety of events, from pro drag racing to grudge races and open sessions. It has an all-concrete eighth-mile and quarter-mile track, spacious pit areas, and ample spectator parking.

The track is popular with all forms of racing teams for testing, including NHRA and Rolex sports car series teams. Cleetus McFarland, a YouTube star and popular Corvette drag racer, uses the track as his home base.

BMP is currently working on a track resurfacing project, which will include the installation of concrete for the entire quarter-mile race surface. This will be a major improvement over the current surface, which begins with concrete and then transitions to asphalt at the shutdown area. The project should be completed just in time for the Holley NMRA Ford Nationals in March 2021. Browse around this site to check more places to visit.
